The developer of Cox® Technic, Dr. James M. Cox, was a deeply passionate advocate for spinal pain management, impacting the lives of countless individuals throughout his career. His devotion to chiropractic education resonated with everyone who encountered him, and his legacy endures through the certified chiropractic colleagues, researchers, and patients who seek local chiropractors who "treat like Dr. X does back home..." Dr. Cox aimed to produce translational research focused on the gentlest and most effective methods to alleviate spine-related pain. He dedicated himself to sharing knowledge with colleagues, ensuring that the principles of Cox® Technic would continue to help back and neck pain sufferers. His enthusiasm for chiropractic education pulsated through his team and fellow students. With heavy hearts, the Cox® Technic team announces the passing of Dr. Cox on March 3, 2025. He spent his life in Fort Wayne, Indiana, apart from his years at the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, where he thrived under the guidance of mentors like Dr. Joseph Janse and Dr. Floyd Blackmore. This foundational education set the stage for his development of Cox® Technic Flexion Distraction Decompression, a technique embraced by nearly 64% of chiropractic practitioners today. Dr. Cox also contributed significantly as a chiropractic speaker, sharing his expertise at nearly every chiropractic school and state association across the U.S. and internationally. Among his noteworthy presentations were those for the Japanese Chiropractic Association and the American Back Society. He tirelessly supported chiropractic education and the pursuit of research throughout his career, serving on various committees and contributing to significant studies funded by HRSA and NIH to document the efficacy of spinal pain management techniques he pioneered. He authored multiple textbooks focused on back pain, ensuring his findings reached a wider audience while donating royalties to chiropractic research funds. As a clinician and researcher, Dr. Cox was dedicated to advancing chiropractic education and enhancing spinal pain management practices. He was the designer of innovative chiropractic tables, a role he embraced as part of his commitment to improving patient care. His advocacy extended to legislative efforts that improved chiropractic practice standards, including a pivotal bill in Indiana that allowed chiropractors to diagnose. As a dedicated family man and philanthropist, Dr. Cox supported numerous charitable causes and maintained a strong connection to his community. The legacy of Dr. James M. Dr. Greenwood is in private practice in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, where he specializes in chiropractic education and the management of spinal pain, specifically herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and other complex cases of spine pain and disability. A 1981 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic, he is a board-certified Chiropractic Orthopedist and a certified Cox® Technic practitioner. He completed his Masters of Advanced Clinical Practice at the National University of Health Sciences in 2012. Dr. Greenwood has published peer-reviewed articles in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine detailing his success with Cox® Technic in managing post-surgical back pain, along with several case reports featured on the Cox® Technic website. He offers hands-on workshops at his Vancouver office, which is 4 hours CE approved for BC, and he also instructs Canada-based and regional Part I seminars by request, teaching Parts I, II, III, IV, and Honors.

Hand-selected out of chiropractic school to be a resident with Cox® Technic’s innovator, James M. Cox, DC, DACBR, Dr. Hazen is one of only a few residents trained personally by Dr. Cox. During his residency, Dr. Hazen gained in-depth chiropractic education in Cox® Technic and learned its proper application along with the office protocols essential for managing spine pain patients treated with this specialized technique. After completing his two-year residency, Dr. Hazen was invited to stay on as an associate and later as a partner until his return to California in 1998. The foundation of his practice is built upon Cox® Technic and its related protocols, which he employs to this day. During his time with Dr. Cox, Dr. Hazen served as an assistant instructor and then as the lead instructor for hands-on workshops in Southern California upon his return. He is now the lead instructor for the Cox® Technic Part 1 Certification Courses and is excited to share his insights and experience with fellow practitioners. Additionally, he offers hands-on workshops at his office in Temecula, CA, which provides 4 hours of CE approved for California. He also instructs West Coast regional seminars and collaborates in teaching Parts I, II, III, IV, and Honors.

Dr. Joachim graduated from the National University of Health Sciences in 1996, where he played a key role as a research assistant in the first federally funded study on "The Biomechanics of Flexion Distraction Adjusting." He holds multiple certifications from NUHS in Cox® Technic, LACC in Chiropractic Rehabilitation, and Parker College in Permanent Impairment Ratio. Additionally, he has received training from the McKenzie Institute focusing on the Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy of the Lumbar Spine since March 1996. Dr. Joachim is also a Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board. Currently, he maintains a private practice in Fort Wayne, IN, and serves as the official chiropractor for the Fort Wayne Komets Pro Hockey Team and the Fort Wayne Fury Pro Basketball Team. In his spare time, he has trained for the Olympic US Bobsled Team (1998 trials) and has participated in the Outdoor Pentathalon (2000), being recognized as the USA Track and Field Masters National Champion. He is passionate about advancing chiropractic education and is excited to be part of the teaching team for Cox® Technic, conducting regional seminars and state association presentations upon request, while also instructing and assisting in Parts I, II, III, IV, and Honors courses focused on effective spinal pain management.

Dr. Ralph Kruse is a 1990 graduate of National University of Health Sciences, where he initially focused on chiropractic education and studied Flexion-Distraction Manipulation. He later earned his Certification in Cox® Technic, became a Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedics, and achieved fellowship status with the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists. For 28 years, Dr. Kruse practiced in Chicago and the South suburban area of Homewood, successfully treating a significant number of patients suffering from cervical and lumbar disc pathology. Actively involved as a research clinician since 1993, he contributed to the Biomechanics of Low Back Flexion Distraction Therapy study at NUHS and has participated in the Cervical Cox® Decompression study at Loyola University Medical Center, along with ongoing post-surgical spine treatment studies. Dr. Kruse has published several studies affirming the clinical efficacy of Cox® Technic for managing spinal pain associated with degenerative disc disease, stenosis, disc herniations, radiculopathy, and pregnancy-related back pain. As an instructor of Cox® Technic, he has traveled across the United States delivering certification courses and has lectured to various state chiropractic associations, as well as the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists. He has also had the privilege of presenting for the Chiropractor’s Association of Saskatchewan in Canada and the Swiss Chiropractic Academy in Switzerland. Currently, Dr. Kruse is a full-time faculty member at Keiser University - College of Chiropractic Medicine in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he instructs regional seminars, offers state association presentations upon request, and teaches/assists in Part I, II, III, IV, and Honors courses.

Dr. Olding is a long-time certified Cox® Technic practitioner who has frequently presented cases at Cox® Technic courses, sharing his insights on spinal pain management and flexion distraction. As a generous supporter of chiropractic education, particularly in flexion distraction research, Dr. Olding is excited to now offer his time and clinical expertise to chiropractic colleagues eager to enhance their treatment plans utilizing the Cox® Technic protocols. He holds an orthopedics diplomate from the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists and practices in Minster, Ohio, alongside his daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Sunni and Tyler Lomnicki, as well as his nephew, Dr. Peter Falk. Recently, he presented Part I lumbar and Part III cervical spine techniques along with hands-on practice for the Swiss Chiropractic Academy in Bern, Switzerland, in addition to Parts I/II in Fort Wayne. Dr. Olding instructs regional seminars and state association presentations upon request, offers his Hands-on workshop at his office in Minster, OH, and teaches/assists in Parts I, II, III, IV, and Honors courses.

Our lead biomechanist and researcher, Dr. Gudavalli, serves as the principal investigator of various research projects focused on flexion distraction, also known as Cox® Technic, MCD (manual cervical distraction), and LVLA (low velocity low amplitude). Since 1991, when he first met Dr. Cox at the National College of Chiropractic (now the National University of Health Sciences), they have collaboratively advanced the scientific and research foundation of flexion distraction and its biomechanical and clinical outcomes relevant to effective spinal pain management. Currently, Dr. Gudavalli is the Chief Researcher at Keiser University - West Palm Beach. His work has also included valuable collaborations at institutions such as the Palmer Research Center, Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, Hines VA Hospital, University of Illinois-Chicago, University of Iowa, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Gudavalli's presentations at Cox® Seminar courses are highly anticipated, as he provides updates on ongoing projects and future plans within the realm of chiropractic education.

Dr. Albano graduated from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri, in May 2000. He is an active member of both the Canadian Chiropractic Association and the Ontario Chiropractic Association. Dr. Albano earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Windsor. With a keen interest in chiropractic education, he has embraced Cox® Technic, focusing on its research and protocols to adapt the flexion-distraction principles for the treatment of knee and hip pain patients. He has published several papers (1) (2) about his experiences with these patients and is currently collaborating with the University of Windsor on an IRB-approved study aimed at collecting official data on the effectiveness of flexion-distraction for spinal pain management. Additionally, he is exploring advancements in shoulder treatment. This new direction is generating excitement among patients and Cox® Technic doctors alike, as he offers hands-on workshops at his practice in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Marc Baker, a 1998 graduate of Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Science degree, later earned his Chiropractic Doctorate from New York Chiropractic College in 2002. He has furthered his chiropractic education by completing a Post-Doctoral Rehabilitation Specialty and obtaining Rehabilitation Fellow status from the Chiropractic College of Rehabilitation Sciences. Additionally, Dr. Baker has undergone 300 hours of Medical Acupuncture Training. Notably, he is the only Chiropractor in the Maritimes certified in Cox® Technic for spinal pain management, having received this certification in 2007. Dr. Baker has also shared his expertise by presenting clinical outcomes at Dr. Cox's Part III course and offers his hands-on workshop at his offices in Musquodoboit Harbour and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, providing 4 hours of CE approved for NS.

Dr. Corbin is a seasoned certified Cox® Technic chiropractic physician practicing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. With over 20 years of experience in spinal pain management, he holds various certifications, including dry needling and manipulation under anesthesia, along with being a CCSP Chiropractic Sports Physician. His expertise extends to whiplash biomechanics and injury traumatology, complemented by 250 hours toward his diplomate in nutrition. As a board-certified practitioner in Louisiana, he has shared his knowledge by presenting multiple cases at prestigious Cox® Honors Courses and offers hands-on chiropractic education workshops in his office in Baton Rouge, LA.

Dr. Dixon graduated from RMIT School of Chiropractic in Australia in 1986. With over 17 years of experience specializing in disc decompression therapies, he became certified in Cox® Technic flexion distraction in 2004. Dr. Dixon has effectively treated patients experiencing various degrees of spinal disc pathology through non-surgical, conservative care, making him an expert in spinal pain management. His extensive experience includes caring for athletes from several Australian organizations, such as the AFL club, Sydney Swans (1980-1981), and the NBL club, South Dragons (2006-2009). Additionally, he has a robust background in obstetrical spinal disorders and provided in-house spinal therapy at two private hospitals from 1986-1997. He served as an RMIT Chiropractic Faculty Panel examiner from 1987-1988 and is actively involved with the Cox® Technic workshop team, offering workshops at his private office in Malvern, Victoria, Australia.

For 33 years, Dr. Patterson has maintained a private chiropractic practice in Overland Park, specializing in spinal pain management. A Cum Laude graduate from Cleveland Chiropractic College in 1988, he is now an adjunct instructor at his alma mater, where he teaches the Cox® Technic, a vital aspect of chiropractic education. In 1998, Dr. Patterson was one of the first to be COX® certified in Kansas and is one of only four actively lumbar spine certified practitioners in the state. Additionally, he is the only Cox® certified cervical doctor in Kansas, offering hands-on workshops at his office in Overland Park, KS.

Dr. Poulin has dedicated many years to practicing and studying Cox® Technic, along with its research and protocols. As a certified Cox® Technic practitioner based in busy eastern Virginia, near Washington DC, he is committed to providing his patients with effective spinal pain management through gentle, non-surgical chiropractic care. His passion drives him to achieve the best results for his patients, and he is excited to share the principles of Cox® Technic through chiropractic education by offering hands-on workshops at his office in Herndon, VA.

Dr. Ted Siciliano is a long-time certified Cox® Technic practitioner who prioritizes chiropractic education by regularly attending courses to stay updated on the latest research, biomechanics, and the application of Cox® Technic protocols. He has authored several case reports for the monthly Cox® Technic Case Report publication and consistently shares cases at Cox® Seminars. Utilizing the Cox8 Force Table in his practice, he is excited to offer a practical, hands-on workshop in his office, located in Mayetta, NJ, which is approved for 4 hours of continuing education (CE) in NJ, focusing on spinal pain management.
